Brake Pads

Your brake pads are a key part of your braking system and they are a part that you your shouldn’t disregard. Friction is caused when the brake pads compress against the brake rotors and this friction makes your car stop. This means hard work for your brake pads, everytime you stop..
The force they have to exert to pull up a moving vehicle is enormous and gives off a lot of heat that causes wear on the brake pads.

Worn brake pads means ineffective braking which is dangerous on the roads. This is why regular inspection and measuring of the condition of your brake pads is necessary.

How do I know when my brake pads need to be replaced?

Squealing brakes can be an indication that your brake pads are worn down; many pads have a small metal piece embedded in them which will scratch on the disc when your brake pads are wearing down, causing that high pitch noise. However, it's not advised to wait until you hear noises to get your pads assessed, we recommend having your brakes inspected at every service.

It is important to remember that unusual brake sounds are not just caused by normal wear and any unusual noises anywhere in your car should always be investigated by a qualified professional mechanic.

At Eastside Automotive we offer a free 65 Point Safety Check with every car service. As part of our Safety Check we inspect the brake pads for wear and inform you if they want replacing. We can also advise the right pad for your driving conditions.

How often should I replace my brake pads ?

Brake Pads can can last anywhere between 15,000 to 70,000 km's. This can vary due to a number of factors such as; driving conditions, driving style, if you are carrying heavy loads or towing. If your brake pads are wearing out early your mechanic might advise using a heavier duty or heat resistant brake pad more suited to your vehicle.

Can I change the brake pads myself ?

Some things are best left to an expert and this is one of them. You should never let anyone but a qualified professional touch something as key to your safety as your braking system.
